Job Description:



Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.



REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Perform design and development in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines and/or machines
  • Lead strategic development tasks or small projects by applying engineering and organizational knowledge and expertise to achieve technical goals
  • Understand and interpret the technical, organizational and process aspects of the task assigned and relate them to the technical needs of the overall project or organization
  • Plan and execute small projects or task elements within larger projects, organizations, or for groups of projects
  • Take responsibility for the completion of assigned engineering tasks or small projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines
  • Actively uncover technical and organizational risks and ensure they are included in risk mitigation plans
  • Participate in development of program strategies and teaming strategies as they relate to the assigned task
  • Conduct feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
  • Direct drafting and technical support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication
  • Travel if required (usually infrequent)


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable engineering proficiency to perform all responsibilities associated with the position
  • Ability to grasp and apply new information quickly
  • Ability to handle progressively more complex assignments
  • Must be proficient with modeling CAD tools with the ability to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings
  • Show initiative on assignments, exercise independent judgment and professionally execute projects with little direction
  • Possess knowledge of technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods and government/industry standards
  • Possess some knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must work well in a dynamic team environment, taking challenges head-on to consistently meet well planned product development schedules.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with designing structures/assemblies to contain and protect optical fiber
  • Experience with Electronics/Optics hermetic enclosure design
  • Skilled in Structural Design and Analysis
  • Skilled in Thermal, Vibration and Shock Analysis of Electronic Packages
  • Knowledge of Corrosion Engineering / Prevention Systems
  • Experience with Underwater Product design/manufacture/mechanical testing
  • Experience with transition to manufacturing
  • Knowledge of and experience with underwater vehicles, hardware, and systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with wet-mate connectors
  • Experience with electronic packaging design (PWB to mounting frame thermal management, fiber-optic splicing and fiber management, and cable/wire routing)


PREFERRED DEGREE TYPES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
